Work to Fun: One dress... lots of options

My girl and I were chatting about shopping... and what we needed to buy the other day. She says to me...  I need clothes that I can wear to work and also outside of work too. This is a struggle that we all have... your work clothes take over your fun clothes and next thing you know... you really having nothing to wear for a night/lunch/afternoon of shopping with the ladies.

I got this little grey dress at Marshalls for $30. It's comfy... it has pockets (of course!) and it's versatile! The grey makes it "corporate" in color, but also more spring color friendly then a black. For work I paired with with this really really old jacket, but the options with spring colors are endless. I posted a couple of cardigans I like. Also, I went really conservative on the shoes. Pumps. Granted they are platform stillettos, but you gotta do that, right?

Florals are in for the spring. This one is good because it's sorta cropped so it'll hit you at your thinnest point if you have a small waist. The site I found this on is sold out... boo, but you get the idea of the shape and possible pattern/color here.

I love this coral animal print cardi from , but right now they are doing a buy 1, get 1 deal. That doesn't make this within the price range I feel good about, BUT it's a good little piece if you can find something similar. Both coral and animal print are big right now... so I feel like this is a two-for-one anyway;)

So you get a better peak at the dress now. If you wanna meet up with the girls OR have errands to run on a Saturday... toss the suit jacket/cardigan and throw on some cute flats and fun jewelery. The dress is cotton... it's awesome for running around AND it doesn't wrinkle.

I love the jewelery. The it's $28.The other necklace is like one I already have that I bought at a flea market. Turquoise is fun for spring... find some... have fun with it.

A couple years ago, I stumbled upon these lovely turquoise snake print flats. I love them. I got mine at Ross for $10. However I found the ones pictured above after a quick search on the internet from a boutique in my home state of SC. The store is in Spartanburg... it's called and currently on clearance for $50. soo cute, yeh?

Bottomline for versatile clothes... good transitional fabric (doesn't wrinkle at work, but not too nice you can't wash it yourself), good shape (comfort! that flatters YOUR figure) and layers (jackets, cardigans and jewelery... don't forget shoes make a difference!)

Sam's Club Perfume Deal... Plus, FREE Hair Stuff

FREEBIES!!! Yippie!
Get on Facebook... STAT! You can score a free full-sized bottle from the ! The first 200,000 get the deal... so get on it NOW!

Also... you can get another TWO FREE full-sized Suave Professional products if you go to their . You have to watch a couple videos and figure which person used Suave and which used expensive stuff... get four right and you win!

(One little thing: when you finally win... you get a choice of prizes... make sure to click to see ALL the prizes they are offering you or you could end up with a $0.50/2 coupon... whomp whomp).

The site let's you track your right/wrong answers at the top... once you find the prize/product you want, "Claim Your Coupon." You will get both your full-sized product AND the $0.50/2 coupon mailed to ya!!!

So let's have a heart-to-heart. A tough truth to face... expensive shampoo isn't necessarily better. Some are more "organic" and smell nicer... but most are no better than Pantene despite what the marketing experts want you to believe. I once did a chemistry experiment taking a look at the chemical makeup... many are virtually the same. So... that said... give the Suave Professionals a shot... it's free. The company that owns Suave has a lot of money to do research... so their products are probably pretty decent. Shocker I know.

 Sam's Club for Perfume?
I needed to restock on my gummy vitamins today (yes, I eat gummies. I love them. They make me want to eat my vitamins... and sometimes I eat extras. ha!)... and pick up my contacts so I made a little pit stop into Sam's Club on my way to work today. To my surprise I discovered the perfume I wanted ON SALE!!! yes... I know... Who'd have thought?!

Funny enough, there was a bottle of the perfume in the normal display, right next to the sale one... the perfume was $52, but I got it out of the sale case for $29.99. It comes in a goofy package you have to cut off... but I save money. I can deal with having to use scissors=)

So you'll notice that I got Viva la Juicy. I recognize that this may be considered a teeny bopper's perfume. I enjoy smelling like a 12-year-old. I actually really like this smell for spring/summer. Don't make fun... it makes me smile in the morning.

Oh my attempt at staying young... Did I mention that I recently scheduled an appointment for the skin care center near me. If you have questions you're too chicken to ask... or just want to know... shoot them my way. I'm going in April and will make sure to ask!

Outift of the Day: Flouncy skirts are so much fun!!!

I really love the girlie skirts/dresses that are out right now, but most of them are not for the office. On a recent shopping adventure I found a great "work" skirt that fits the silloutte and I had to pick it up=)

TODAY'S OUTFIT:
Skirt = $40 Zara
Ruffle Blouse = $40 Zara
Leggings = $10 TJ Maxx
Suede Booties = $14 DSW

Hopefully you can see in the picture, but the blouse has elastic at the bottom. This usually has me putting it back... but I realized recently that I could still tuck it in and make it look tailored for work. The great thing is now this shirt can be a cute shirt for going on with my girls AND work appropriate!

The skirt has pockets... need I say more. It hides EVERYTHING, while cinching you in at your smallest area. Super cutesy. It's a good corporate color... but the silloutte I was looking for. The options with this one are endless...

600 calories on a SALAD!?!? I should have gotten a cheeseburger!

I'm trying to eat "healthy." Don't worry... I don't have some warped idea that I need to lose a bunch of weight or anything.  I recognize that if I eat the things I love in moderation now... hopefully I will be able to continue to have them in my life in moderation for longer. Throw in my science knowledge... and my uber nerdness once again takes over.

Salad's are supposed to be healthy.
This is a big FAT lie!!! I went to McAlister's Saturday with one of my girlfriends. I ordered the Savannah Chopped Salad. I thought I was being all good. I don't even like salads... but as salads go it wasn't too bad. It had grilled chicken, cranberries little veggies and a vingarette dressing. healthy right? NO!

I just looked it up to log... and it's 610 calories AND 40g of fat! Seriously?! Who  makes a salad like that? A man... obviously. No women would ever put that many calories in a salad. Ever. A McD's cheeseburger only has 317 calories and 14.56g of fat. I'd have been better off and happier with McD's. Grrr.

At least all the unsweet tea I guzzled is still calorie free... but even now, days later I am still angry. McAlister's you tricked me!!! but never again!

Lesson Learned
The moral of this story... know what you're eating. Do some research. The best thing about logging my food is that I'm aware of what I'm actually putting in my mouth. After looking around... the next time I order a salad it will be a chef (no bacon and light dressing on the side)... that seems to be a safe salad to get.

Thank God for google. At least now you can google Restaurant "X" and nutritional values and find out what you just ate. Next time I'm going to google first.

I eat out a lot because of my constantly on-the-go life... I've discovered that even the seemingly healthy things aren't really when you eat out. At a lot of restaurants they put butter in your veggies... and on your bread... hidden little things that add up quick.

Counting Points
In case you're wondering... I actually log everything and count it all with . No... I don't go to meetings, but I do it online. I never feel deprived... I can have what I want within reason any day that I want it. It's a great tool to learn moderation and figure out what you're actually eating.

I feel better... I have more energy... and I never feel guilty about it at all. It's great. Tonight I still have enough points left for Girls' Scout cookies... Somoa's here I come=)

Everyone has to find their little thing that works... this keeps me straight and from overdoing it. I'm a distracted food person... my taste buds often dictate my actions. I don't like things that taste healthy... and this plan lets me eat things I like. It's also helped me find healthy versions of flavors I enjoy.

No more eating  lettuce. Lettuce is for rabbits. (still mad)

Outfit of the Day: Date Night

Date night... ya wanna look cute... but you don't wanna look like you're trying so hard... sorta tricky. My go-to date night outfit is almost always a dress. It's one item... not too much jewelry... so it seems simple, right?

TODAY'S OUTFIT:
  • Little black dress = $50 Arden B.
  • Gladiator heels = $50 Aldo

The dress has built-in bling... so minimal jewelry is needed. It's fitted, but not too tight... and it's shorter, but not so short your mom would yell at you and call you a hoochie. The goal is to look cute, but not skanky... little black dresses are always good for that.

Mexican Food Isn't Always Bad for You!

I like to eat. I really like to eat. I try to eat healthy, but I refuse to eat things that taste healthy. I'd rather not eat, than feel like I'm grazing in the pasture like an animal. ughh, gross. One of my absolute favorite types of foods to eat is Mexican. I LOVE love LOVE Mexican food!!! Problemo: it is not usually very healthy for you. Oh but I have found a way to eat the Mexican that I crave... without having to feel guilty.

Burrito Salad
Serving Size=1
Time=10 minutes

One of my favorite quick meals is a Burrito Salad.  It's basically the inside of the burrito on your plate/bowl... My fav is the one from Chipotle. I decided to do it for myself at home... totally possible and easy... AND very inexpensive=) I made my version for my man and he was in shock that it's actually healthy.

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups lettuce/spinach/greens of choice (this is the salad part)
  • 1/2 can of black beans
  • 1/2 can of mexicorn (optional)
  • 1/4 cup of low fat shredded cheese
  • 1/4 avocado (optional)
  • 3 oz chicken/steak/tofu
  • 1 small can of salsa (ya gotta get this in the international aisle of the grocery)
  • Chipotle sauce/enchilada sauce
Directions:
  1. Cook the chicken/steak/tofu. If you want to make it spicy add a spicy tomato chipotle sauce to the pan... if you don't do spicy add the enchilada sauce.
  2. Heat up the black beans and corn in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes.
  3. Put the lettuce in a bowl first. Then add all the other ingredients that you want.
Healthy Enchiladas
Serving Size=10
Total Time=40 minutes

This next fav... is a newbie. My girlfriend Annie made enchiladas for our girls' night recently and it was a huge hit. I seriously craved it for days... until she gave me the recipe and I made it for myself. YAY Annie!!! I asked her if I could share her wonderful dish with you guys... and she said sure, so here ya go=)

Ingredients:
  • 1 tomatillo
  • 1 can of petite diced tomatoes
  • 1 can of black beans (get no salt added kind)
  • 1 can of sweet corn (get no salt added kind)
  • 1 box of spanish rice
  • 1 large bunch of cilantro
  • 1 large lime
  • 1 can of mild green chilies
  • 2-3 cans of red enchilada sauce (I like more sauce, depends on how much you like)
  • 1-2 bags of shredded light mexican cheese (again depends what you like, and how much you like)
  • 1 package of sweet peppers - the little guys - usually red yellow and orange come in a package / or one green pepper or red pepper depends what you like - i like the sweet peppers
  • Black pepper to taste (dont add salt - promise you dont need it)
  • Guacamole (this is for the side, dont put in the mix)
  • Sour Cream if you like (for the side)
  • Large tortillas (10 in a package)
  • Meat of choice if you want... I'd get at least a pound
Directions:
  1. Heat the oven to 350
  2. Cook the Spanish rice. Then put it into a big big bowl! (only use 1/2 the seasoning packet - then rinse the rice after its been cooked, to get a more mild less salty taste - it can be over powering and salty if you dont rinse the rice OR just dont use the seasoning and use reg instant rice...)
  3. If you're adding meat then cook it in a can of enchilada sauce and add to the bowl. You can leave out the meat and it tastes awesome too!
  4. Rinse the beans and corn well (get rid of that salt!). Add to the big bowl.
  5. Chop the sweet peppers, tomatillo, and cilantro into small pieces - add to the big bowl.
  6. Add the diced tomatoes (include juice) and chile's and some cheese
  7. Add black pepper to taste
  8. Squeeze the lime juice into the mixture and toss - let stand for about 10 mins (i mix it for about 5 then let it marinate for 5)
  9. Take the tortillas and place about 3 -5 tablespoons of the mix into the middle of the tortilla - use more or less depending on size of tortilla - they are supposed to be stuffed - wrap by pulling the sides in, then tucking the top flap under the bottom flap - place the enchilada flap side down so the tops are the flat parts
  10. Pour enchilada sauce all over - smothering it if you will
  11. Add the remaining cheese on top (cover it!)
  12. Bake for about 20 minutes....then EAT!!!
***One of the best parts of this recipe is that the mix you use inside the enchilada is also a great... GREAT dip with a tortilla chip! I like the "dip" without meat better than with meat... but it's so awesome that you can use your left over mix as an appetizer!!! LOVE!=)

Outfit of the Day: A Little Bit of Lace

Lace is everywhere for the spring... and while I think it looks dainty, I really struggle figuring out a way to wear it so that I don't look look a tablecloth my grandma would use.

While I'd really love to wear one of those cute lace dresses... it's just not practical for me (I just know I'll get snagged on something... always do). There are a gazillion cute lace tops... but I just can't do full-on lace... so I'm starting with baby steps and hopefully with time will come comfort. Maybe one day me and lace with be friends?

TODAY'S OUTFIT:
  • Design History cardigan = $20 TJ Maxx
  • Jeggings = $20 Target
  • No name lace top = $5 Marshall's
  • Luchiny sandals = $20 DSW
  • Skinny belt = $10 The Limited
Here in Mexico it's pretty chilly in the morning and at night, but it gets blazing hot during the middle of the day. That means... ya gotta layer it up! I've been wanting to try this lace top with a cardigan like this... I really wanted a coral color or bright orange... but since I haven't found those colors yet, I decided to wear it anyway.

There is just a touch of lace at the neckline. It's enough that I think it makes the outfit girlie... hence, why I put on the skinny belt... but not so much that you look like a doily. I really think some bright coral or turquoise jewelry would be cute with it... but didn't pack any so... no bueno. Even a bright belt could work...

This is an example of a work in progress... my closet is always evolving... I'm sure I'll never have all the "pieces" I want... but that's the fun of it, right?!

Outfit of the Day: Making Dressy More Casual

When in Rome... right? I'm in Mexico... there are pretty flowers and sunshine... and beautiful women. I decided it was time to ditch all those flippin' sweaters and put something sassy on=)

I have a lot of dresses that seem pretty dressy and I've been trying to make them day wearable. Today was an experiment.

TODAY'S OUTFIT:
  • Rachel Roy dress = $30 Macy's
  • Seven wedges = $50 TJ Maxx
  • Belt = $10 Body Central

This little dress was part of my big sale find at Macy's post-Christmas sale. I would normally wear it with some sexy stilettos and big earrings. It's got a low plunging neckline and by itself it is a fairly hot dress.

However, pairing this type of dress with a big casual-style belt... and then the big chunky wedge shoes makes it much more casual. I think the big belt and shoes add a good contrast to a dress that is very flirty, feminine on its own.

Body Central... really Eva? yes. I know it's sort of a skanky store... but there are little things you can find in there that are useable.  I've learned that things like belts and jewelry are easy places to buy cheap. This belt gives me the chance to play with the whole braided trend without spending a fortune on it.

Time to Cowboy Up

One of my greatest friends loves country music concerts. A group of my girlfriends are all planning on going to some concerts this summer and I decided if I'm going to go... I need to look the part. I like to play dress up... what can I say! =D

Since I'm vacaying in Mexico... I thought I should get cowboy boots here=) I like to buy something fun in every place I travel so I remember my wonderful time... and I like especially to get things that I can use/wear repeatedly!!!

Shopping In the Market... No hablo Espanol... Eeeek!
I set off to a major market here in Guadalajara. I don't speak Spanish... like at all. I wandered around til I found boots I liked and then my "interpreter" helped me bargain them down. The guy tried to get me to pay about $250... not a chance that was happening. After much haggling... and marvelous team playing with my "interpreter" the sales guy came down to about $80. SCORE!

I may have still been able to get down lower on the price... but I figure if I bought them in the US I'd def pay more than $200 for them... so I could walk away feeling good about the purchase.

I really feel like I can wear these Cowboy boots with any little dress or jeans or leggings even for these country concerts. I threw them on after buying the boots just to see what they'd look like... and I think I'm ready for some country fun! ha!

The boots are a slightly orange-shade of leather... that way they'd go with black or brown outfits... and be a bit funky! I love them! PS. You def need socks to wear with boots... I had them on for like 5 minutes for these pictures and my feet were already hot!

All cowboy'd up! Ladies... let's buy those concert tickets!!!

On Vacation: OPI We'll Always Have Paris

OPI-We'll Always Have Paris
I am on vacation!!! whoop whoop! It was much needed... and thought that my vacay blogs should all feel that way. Before I left... when I was feeling "blah" I sent my nails on vacation with OPI's We'll Always Have Paris=)

I am in the midst of my OPI Axxium nail test... so I'm gonna have the same nail polish for 2 weeks. Right before I started the challenge I painted my nails for a few days... specifically so I'd have another polish color to post about. hehe!

As Spring weather is fast approaching... or has already arrived for some of you.... the opportunities to wear dark nail polish is quickly fading. I wanted to sneak in one or two last polishes for fun!

I went with one of the OPI Paris color lines... We'll Always Have Paris. The color is actually a really dark purple... but it looks so dark that it seems black. Outside I think you can see the purple tone... but that requires a little sunshine. Either way... I love dark purples.

I'm on the hunt for a dark purple that isn't so black. I'm thinking I could wear it during the warmer months if it didn't look so black. I will hunt it down on my next polish hunt.

Update on OPI Axxium
I'm several days into my nails and so far... so good. Not even anything that looks like a chip. Usually by day 2 or 3 the french manicure starts to look crackled... it looks awesome still. I'm happy so far...

    Costco Goes Bridal

This is not a joke... it's for real... Costco "Couture." The discount box store has teamed up with Couture to sell wedding dresses at in-store trunk shows in select Costco warehouses.
photo by Kirstie Kelly Signature Bridal Collection for Costco

per the LA Times... " The trunk shows began in Northern California last month and will make their way to Southern California beginning March 3, with four-day salons at Costco locations in Torrance (March 3-6), San Bernardino (March 10-13), L.A. (March 17-20) and Van Nuys (March 24-27). Appointments are recommended."

The designer came up with 6 dresses that will set you about from about $700 to about $1,400. It's not under the $500 mark... BUT these dresses usually run from $2,000 to $7,000. The ones you find in Costco will be about 40% off retail.

I wanted to see what these dresses look like! right? so the best that I could find was this quick little show-and-tell from KCRA in Sacramento... but ya get the idea.

After looking at the video... I think some of them are on the ... so you can see them a little better there.

The Costco wedding shops aren't permanent so ya gotta get 'em while you can. Most locations look to be open about 4 days long and actually have real wedding dress specialists in there working in the temporary location. So don't worry... the guy who puts out the roasted chickens... isn't going to be helping you zip up your dress. ha!

My producer, Steve at work thinks I should do a story on this when/if it comes to our neck of the woods... hopefully it will. I will be sure to take lots of pictures of things like the dresses and all the details... and post video of it all. So standby for the announcement of my visit to Costco! =)

Outfit of the Day: Welcoming Spring!

It's March. It's spring time... and today I'm celebrating. I pulled out my favorite paisley print and decided to figure out a way to make it work at the office!
Threw on a jacket for work!
no jacket... releases my inner "hippie" haha!

     TODAY'S OUTFIT:
    • Alice + Olivia top = $40 (Charlotte, NC)
    • Necklaces = $10 total for both Forever 21
    • Pants = $20 Zara
    • Boots = $100 Belk
The guys I work with made fun of me for this outfit... told me I was bright today. ha!  I'm not 100% sold that this outfit was a good idea, but I had spring fever... couldn't help it. My thought was that the jacket would give it the appearance of the "corporate" look I needed to be appropriate at the office, but I think the pants were too fitted to achieve that... not sure.

I did feel a bit like a hippie... but the 60s influence is big for the spring... right?
